Fri, Jan 1st, 2016 My newest handmade ceramic backsplash tile is underway for a client in Edward, Colorado. I met Nat at an art show in Vail in 2013. He mentioned his kitchen renovation project was in the planning stages and he was interested in a custom handmade kitchen backsplash. I stayed in touch and 3 years later I'm creating the artwork 'Elk on the Range'.
Nat lives in the beautiful Colorado Mountains just outside of Vail with magnificent views all around. This backsplash is designed to honor the trek of the Elk, each year, through his backyard and up into the mountains. Hundreds of elk take the path they've always taken, Nat is the newcomer to this picture and he loves sharing this great land.
After a few drawings and adjustments, the creation began. First I laid the tiles out, then sketched out my plan. From there the carving, stretching, altering and adjusting came into play. Slowly, 'Elk on the Range' came into view.
The backsplash was bisque fired and cooled, then the Glazing began.
Elk on the Range was a brilliant palette of greens, white, blue and earth tones, replicating the vistas of the Vail, Colorado countryside.
Nat's home looks at this real life view of hundreds of elk migrating across his land each winter.
Here it is grouted and on the wall. It completes his kitchen beautifully!
