Sun, Mar 16th, 2014 My Sarasota client is renovating his kitchen and has hired me to create a custom kitchen backsplash behind his 6-burner viking stove.
Below are some shots of the custom kitchen backsplash in process. The total backsplash size is 18"h x 36"w. I designed & created 3 renditions of the tile art kitchen backsplash and let them dry on my ware racks.
We have had a surprising amount of rain, (and my new studio has only 2 small windows) so everything is drying quite slowly.
The counter will be granite; the tiles surrounding the custom kitchen backsplash will be 2" x 6" Subway tiles with a beveled 'listello' tile as a border for the backsplash.
The colors and feel we're looking at are best shown in the samples below of other finished tile art pieces. Though Leon's home has a calm feeling, he has a bold sense of color with the accent walls in the adjacent living-room this dusty peacock blue.
All 3 custom backsplashes are glazed & fired. Leon made his selection and scheduled his contractor to install the custom kitchen backsplashl. Here are the final results. The finished tile art backsplash is a beautiful balance to the room. Leon made the decision to do something clever - instead of grouting the hand-made backsplashl directly onto the wall, he had it grouted onto a wonder board and screwed the board to the wall, then covered the screws. This allows Leon to change out the custom kitchen backsplash anytime he wants with another art piece - and use this custom piece in another location in his home. I love the diversity of that option!
