Busy Summer!

Fri, Sep 14th, 2012 It's been a busy summer between commissions, art fairs and private home showings. But I'm back in the studio finishing up 2 commissions for my Texas Private Home Showing this October.

Russell & Christine got a peek at their first commission firing last month. Today I fired the second one and have the results.

First, here are the shots of firing #2 ON THE GLAZE TABLE. I like to show how the colors are put on, feathered and directed toward the look I think they want. The blue in this case was quite strong, so I muted it a bit with a spray of gray. I also put a warm gray on the hills below, but didn't want that washed out, so I added a darker gray lightly over the lighter gray. This mural was fired in the bottom of the kiln, where the burners are hottest. I wanted to make sure the glaze melted into a smooth satin.

The FIRST FIRING result was lighter than I wanted...and though they liked it, they were concerned it would be too light... THIS FIRING is much more dramatic... but it may be too dramatic for their small bathroom. I have one more option to show them. I'll work on that this weekend...

Here are the results:
